NetBattleTech League History Museum
Setup for NBT1 began on January 1st, 1997, with the league officially starting on February 2nd, 1997. It was made up of units coming from other such leagues as the Grand Council and the Registry. The platform used was MechWarrior 2 by Activision. There wasn’t an automation to speak of, but rather everything was run by email, a few web forms, and through a primary league Excel spreadsheet maintained by the League Admins. All movements, purchases, and income was handled manually. End date for the league was November 3rd, 1997. The league was set in the 3068 timeframe, with a heavily modified BTech based map. The rules that were created have formed the basis for each NBT League since. League Admins included Dark Phoenix and Rogue.
NetBattleTech 3068 (NBT2): This was a modified version of NBT1. Most of the same units were involved, but some restructuring was done to the league to bring the league into more of an IS vs IS basis. The most active units were transferred to the IS Houses so that they could handle the higher battle load. An automated map system was implemented at this time that was able to be updated through an Access download that kept the map up-to-date and showed all legal jumps. The Excel spreadsheet was still in use through the course of this league. Start date for NBT2 was November 12th, 1997 and ran through September 7th, 1998. Platform used for this league was MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries by Activision. League Admins included Dark Phoenix and Nikki.
League Admins information unavailable at this time.
Start date for NBT4 was April 8th, 2001 and ran through February 23rd, 2003. The last official action of this league was Clan Jade Falcon taking Terra Prime. A total of 3,772 battles were launched over the 23 month period, with unit participation ranging from 30 to 50 active units. League Admins included Die Kerensky, Pain, Viking and Dark Phoenix.
NBT-Mercs: With the release of MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries by Microsoft, the decision was made to start a new league based upon this ‘new’ platform and steering more towards a role-play based system. Many changes were made to the rules, new ideas, modified economy, and other changes (some streamlining, others were additional features). Many parts of the automation were recoded from scratch and the Dynamic Starmap was integrated with a majority of the autmation. The BTech timeframe for this league is 3058 following the Refusal War and the WoB taking of Terra. Start date for NBT-Mercs was March 7th, 2003 and ran through July 1st, 2005. Over 450 battles were launched each month, with almost 12,000 battles being fought over the course of the league. Over 70 units and 1500 different pilots participated. League Admins include Die Kerensky, Viking and Dark Phoenix.
NBT-Solaris: The Solaris portion of NBT is a pending project designed to add ladder league style play to NBT, doing so in a very RP intensive setting. Solaris is made up of 3 stages: Stage 1 is an online conversion of the CBT MechWarrior RPG Character Creation system, allowing the creation of a wide variety of characters for use in all NBT leagues. Stage 2 of Solaris is the actual ladder league, with online play for the pilots of the league. Stage 3 is an online "gambling" system, thus allowing the participants of NBT-Solaris to wager on upcoming matches. While Stage 1 of this project is in a usable state, Stage 2+ has been placed on indefinite hold at present, pending creation of the necessary league automation to support the project. We are in the process of making Stage 1 fully public access with the hope of attracting a coder with both the skill and time to bring the project to completion. League Admins include Dark Phoenix, Suthendale, as well as the Solaris City Sector Administrators.
NBT-HardCore: NBT-HC is a project created by the NBT Development Team, in conjunction with the Clash of Steel team to build a joint Expansion Pack and League System. NBT-HC 1.0 has been released as of June 15th, 2005, and the supporting league system launched on July 4th, 2005. The HCB public beta continues in the development of a series of Booster Packs (4 released to date), designed to introduce additional 'Mechs and Weapons for use in the league. As of the 18 month mark, over 4000 battles have been launched, with over 7000 combat drops being fought on league servers. NBT-HC is set in the 3067 BTech timeframe, with many map and unit changes being made to accomodate the timeline. Many aspects from current CBT development are being used, as well as many sourcebooks released by FanPro and BattleCorps. League Admins include Dark Phoenix, Viking and Traxxas.
NBT-Classic: A pending development project with the goal of applying the NBT League System to the MegaMek Client. It is being designed as a sister league for NBT-HC, running at the same time with a host of different units. We are in the process of determining the rule changes necessary to support a change from using MW4 to MegaMek. If you would like to participate in this development process, chime in on the HPG Uplink. NBT-Classic is set in the 3067+ BTech timeframe, with many map and unit changes being made to accomodate the timeline. Many aspects from current CBT development are being used, as well as many sourcebooks released by FanPro and BattleCorps. NBT-Classic role-play history will start from the current start date, but from that time onward will develop on its own creations. League Admins include Dark Phoenix, Viking and Traxxas.
NBT-Battlefield: A brand new development project with the goal of applying the NBT League System to the Battlefield 2142 Game Client. It is being designed as a sister league for NBT-HC, running at the same time with a host of different units. We made a host of rule and automation changes/simplifications to support a change from using MW4 to BF2142. If you would like to participate in this continuing development process, chime in on the HPG Uplink. This is the first time that the league automation system will have been applied to a totally non-BattleTech based game. The league is being based upon an earlier CBT timeline in order to support the notion of 'Mechs being in development (first field test in 2439), rather than mainstream weapon platforms. As such, NBT-Battlefield is set in the 2575 BTech timeframe, with many map and unit changes being made to accomodate the timeline. NBT-Battlefield has officially launched as of January 1st, 2007. League Admins include Dark Phoenix, Viking and Traxxas.
